Before you think about buying new or used forklifts, you need to think about what you need it for. This will save you a lot of time and hassel. While forklift dealers can be very helpful in your search, you will be better served if you spend some time educating yourself. Ask yourself a few very important questions:
What type of work will your forklifts be used for? Asking yourself this question will help you decide what type of used forklift you need. If you will be using it mostly indoors for restacking shelves with pallets you will need a warehouse forklift. This includes pneumatic tire and cushion tire sit down riders, order pickers, reach trucks, stackers, narrow aisle forklifts and pallet jacks. If, however, you need more industrial forklifts you will need to shop for rough terrain forklifts, telescopic boom lifts or scissor lifts.
How much weight will you be lifting at one time (this is know as lift capacity)?
What is the minimum and maximum height you need to reach with your used forklifts?
What is your budget for this forklift purchase? Keep in mind that you will need to consider your distance from the forklift dealers because the forklift will have to be transported to you and you will need a nearby location to have it serviced. The average cost to have a forklift transported can be $500 - $1500 depending on the distance.
Engine type is an important consideration with your forklift purchase. As we have seen, gas prices are somewhat volatile and you can save a great deal of money by not using propane, gas or diesel fuel. However, the cost of electric used forklifts is generally higher than the cost of other types.
Purchasing forklifts is just like a car purchase, they are exactly the same. When shopping for a car, you need to think about what you will be using it for. Did you just have a child, so you need a mini-van? Are you retired and looking for a convertable? Are you looking for a hybrid to save on fuel. The same questions apply. Would you go to a car dealer without having any idea of what type of car you were looking for? Probably not! The same is true for your forklift sales. The more educated you are, the better purchase you will make.
