Forklift License Renewal: What You Need to Know

forklift license renewal blog

Quick Summary:

Forklift licenses don’t last forever. OSHA requires that operators renew their certifications regularly to stay safe and compliant. If your forklift license has expired — or you’re not sure when it does — this guide walks you through everything you need to know about your forklift renewal process.

When Does a Forklift License Expire?

In most states, forklift licenses are only valid for 3 years from the date of your last evaluation. After that three years, operators are required to be retrained and re-evaluated.

Under OSHA Standard 29 CFR 1910.178(l)(4), forklift certification is valid for three years from the date of evaluation. After that, the operator must be retrained and re-evaluated to remain in compliance.

Read the OSHA regulation here.

Situations That Require Early Recertification

In some cases, operators might be required to recertify before those three years expire. Here are some reasons why OSHA might require a refresher training:

  • The operator is involved in a forklift-related accident or near-miss
  • An operator is observed operating the equipment unsafely
  • The operator is assigned to a different type of forklift
  • Workplace conditions change significantly (recently added new ramps, narrow aisles, or other hazards)
  • OSHA is regulated at the state level

Employers are responsible for identifying when these events happen and ensuring retraining takes place.

What’s Involved in Forklift License Renewal?

The forklift license renewal process is similar to the initial certification. After a quick refresher on safety practices or warehouse-specific incident training, you’ll be required to pass a written exam reviewing OSHA standards and forklift knowledge and a performance evaluation scoring your driving ability.

This process can take between 1 – 2 hours, and is often done directly onsite.

Forklift Refresher vs. Recertification Training

In some cases, operators may be required to take a refresher training course, which is different from getting recertified. A refresher training might occur when safety regulations change, new equipment is added to the fleet, or managers want to correct performance gaps.

Forklift license renewals are triggered every three years, regardless of all other factors. These cover the content in most refresher courses, followed by the hands-on evaluation.

How Much Does Forklift Recertification Cost?

Getting your forklift license renewed usually costs about the same or slightly less than your original certification. Many employers provide recertification at no cost as part of safety compliance. If you retest through an independent contractor, you may need to pay out of pocket, but always verify with your employer if there’s an option for reimbursement.

FormatAverage Cost
Onsite Employer TrainingFree or $50–$100
Third-Party Refresher Course$75–$150
Full Recertification Course$150–$250 (if expired)

How to Check Your Forklift License Expiration Date

You can determine your next forklift license renewal date by referencing your current certification card. Most forklift certification cards list the issue date and expiration date directly on the license so you can easily track when it’s time to renew.

Contact your training provider or employer’s safety officer to request a new copy if your card is lost. Remember to plan ahead to renew on time. You can’t operate a forklift with an expired forklift certification.

After it’s finished, make sure to update your employer with the right documents to keep your records up to date.

Does OSHA Require a New Certification Card?

Yes! A new certification document will be issued showing the updated expiration date after you complete your forklift license renewal. If you are recertified through a third-party, be sure to provide your employer with a copy to keep on file and always carry your operator card on the job site.
